James Hanscombe left FHS in 1984 to go to Bredon School. He says “I am no longer driving a white van I've upgraded to a grey one!!! I am still running my landscape gardening business as well as buying and selling properties or renting them out, whichever is the most profitable at the time”. James says he is very happy with life in general. He is married with 3 children.

Johanna Kalli (now Cuthbertson) went to St Anne's Convent when she left FHS in 1985 and then to St Augustine's Priory, both in Ealing. After leaving school she went to East Berkshire College, Langley to study Childcare. She gained an NNEB and worked in several nursery including ‘Teddies' in Twickenham. She has a nine month old son Archie. Johanna's lasting memory of FHS was of Mr Romanov, she said, “He was one of those teachers you want to work with. At my later schools you felt that some of the teachers just couldn't be bothered.” If you would like to contact Johanna email me. CL

Lucy Travis left FHS in 1988 to go to Warminster School. On leaving school she went to Portsmouth University then started work at The Department For Environment Food and Rural Affairs and for Raleigh International. She would love to get in touch with anyone she knew at FHS which “completely changed my life”. Most fun memory....playing bumper cars in Hyde Park and going to Hindleap, lunch breaks in Hyde Park especially when it snowed...Remember "Star of the week!" Lucy has also been actively involved in Charity work as a volunteer for Raleigh International, She loves her job at ‘Business In the Community'. “In between travelling I hold down a very interesting job! “
Charlotte Park (Charlie) went to Stonar School in 1989 then went to Westminster City College where she studied Art Theatre. She later joined the Battersea Arts Centre and was part of the YPT group Theatre where she had 7 acting roles in professional productions. Her first job was as an Office Coordinator for an estate agent, she also did some modelling. She now works as a self-employed Private PA with some celebrity clients. Charlie remembers the people at FHS with great affection “They were all great, I got on better with them than at any of the other schools I went to”..

Alexi Vaigncourt-Strallen left FHS in 1989 to go to Edgarley Hall (Millfield Junior School). She then went to Stonar School with Charlie (see above) and after that to South Bank University. She says “I am working for L'Occitane at the moment so get to spend half my time in London and the other half in France, which is great because I get to do loads of ski-ing!

Old Fairleyans from the 90s
Gareth Austin (1991) went to ADT College where he got 10 GCSEs and 3 A-Levels (B,C,D). He then went to London Guildhall University to study for an LLB in Business Law. In Sept 2006 Gareth gained 1st class honours and joined Eversheds LLP as a Solicitor. In May 2008 he joined Crowell & Moring, a Washington based law firm where he specialises in defending companies and individuals in regulatory and criminal fraud investigations/ prosecutions. He lives in Acton. Gareth says “There is no doubt in my mind that Fairley House made a big difference to me. The people and teachers were all fantastic and although my brother and I only attended the school for 1 year, there is no doubt that it had a profound impact on both of us. For me, I took away that it was absolutely fine to be a little different to other children and that with a bit of determination and figuring out what learning techniques worked for me, I could still do whatever I wanted. Brent Caldwell was my tutor and I think warrants a special mention. He is a massive character and a great teacher. He made a big difference to my life and I am sure I am not the only one .”

Mary McFarlane (1992) went first to the Green School then to Richmond College where she got 3 As in her A levels. After that she went to University College London where she got a BSc Hons in Speech Science (2.1) RCSLT. Mary's first job was as a Speech and language Therapist (North Shore Hospital Auckland NZ). She has worked as a Clinical lead in SLT Neurosciences at the Royal London Hospital. Mary is just about to move back to Auckland to start her masters. She is very grateful for FH and its fantastic teachers especially Mr Caldwell “What I would like to say is that I feel very strongly that dyslexics need still to be pushed, what I mean is that parents should not be afraid to encourage them to reach the highest levels. I found that when I returned to the state education system the teachers had very low expectations of me. I even had to leave my school to attend sixth form college because my school did not think I should do a science A' Level. (I am glad I did not listen to them. I got an A in Human biology with 100% in 2 modules, and went on to do a Bachelor of science degree with Hons at UCL). Who knows where I would be if I wasn't pushed a bit at this point. What I would love to say is it gets much much easier as you get older. My spelling is just as bad and I still don't know my timestables, but is does not matter, you get round it. I think the biggest issue for dyslexics is developing self esteem and confidence.”

(Mary came in to talk to FH in assembly on March 19th and was much appreciated by all)
