Art is an important subject at Fairley House where we benefit from a well equipped, spacious, purpose - built Art studio and kiln room.
We enjoy very close proximity to Tate Britain and are in easy reach of other major London galleries.
Art provides dyslexic children with the opportunity to express themselves, gain confidence and experience a sense of achievement. They learn the basics of art and are encouraged to experiment through using materials and media. All learning modes are accommodated through visual, tactile and other sensory experience that help develop imagination and the ability to communicate ideas and meaning. Children are encouraged to keep sketchbooks in order to record observations, gather information and develop ideas.

Design Technology
Design Technology is a popular subject that allows pupils an opportunity to utilise a range of skills.
The emphasis here is firmly hands - on activity where children are encouraged to seek creative solutions, whilst developing practical and problem solving skills.
Seeing a piece of work through from design idea to finished product, making decisions and choices along the way, promotes a sense of ownership and agency.

The open ended design and making process encourages curiosity and focuses energy on independent thinking. The predominantly 3D focus where materials are handled and transformed enables children who may work spatially and kinaesthetically to achieve.
Children have the chance to enjoy working with textiles, wood, recycled materials, electrical control, mechanics and structures. The challenging curriculum overlaps with other subject areas, especially maths, science, art and ICT.
At Key Stage Three pupils also analyse existing products, the consumer, and learn about designers.
